Welcome to Coal Creek!
On behalf of the Coal Creek Elementary faculty and staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our school’s website.
I am honored to serve as the Principal of Coal Creek Elementary School! This school
community is rooted in a rich history of focusing on a child-centered, holistic approach to education with a strong foundation and platform in the BVSD curriculum.
Our students’ happiness and successes are of paramount importance in our efforts to providing the best school experience for your child. The award winning staff is passionate about supporting our students’ growth academically and behaviorally. They are extremely dedicated to this school community and have a deep appreciation and love for our special family and home. We are also fortunate to have tremendous parent and community support. This partnership is a cornerstone for helping our students and the school achieve maximum potential.
Coal Creek Elementary has a rich history in academic excellence. We have received the Colorado John Irwin Schools of Excellence Award multiple times through the years and again most recently in 2018. The John Irwin Award is given to a school when they demonstrate exceptional academic achievement over time.
We believe deeply in the importance of educating the whole child so everyone has the opportunity to find their passion. Students receive a wonderful experience with exploration in the following areas: general and instrumental music, physical education, library/ technology and studio-based art. We offer a variety of academic and social programs for both advanced and struggling learners including Talented and Gifted, Special Education, and with our new RISE Program (Reaching Independence through Structured Environments.) This program is designed for students with autism who have academics at or above their general education grade level band with a focus on general ed curricular access and behavior support.
The school is dedicated to strengthening students’ problem-solving skills by integrating the “Habits of Mind” model, based on the work of Dr. Arthur Costa. Coal Creek Elementary received the honor of being named a Habits of Mind International School of Excellence in 2017. We believe that the Habits of Mind encourage a broader definition of intelligence and provide more avenues for Puma students to increase their success both inside and outside of school.
Parent involvement and partnership is valued at Coal Creek Elementary. We have a very active PTA that is involved in many school wide activities and fundraising. We are also focusing our efforts and looking forward to developing our Coal Creek Accountability Team (SAC) this upcoming school year as a platform and avenue for parent involvement.
We are also fortunate to have the incredible Boulder Valley School District community support year after year. The financial support from the bond provided us the opportunity to undergo a major construction project at Coal Creek Elementary. This work allows us to continue to maintain a safe, healthy and comfortable campus for our students and school community. We were also able to focus efforts on creating learning environments that support different approaches to instruction.
My background involves being a teacher at the elementary, middle school, adult education levels, and I was also an assistant principal for 10 years. I am passionate about education and supporting students’ social emotional development so they are happy and able to pursue whatever passions they have in life. I also believe firmly in the power of relationships and how they can transform many aspects in life.
